“Ok, but whatever you do, make it happen quick.  I’ve put the kibosh on any more news reports relating to this whole thing.  At least television reports anyway.”

“Seriously?   How’d you do that?” Jenny asked.

“Let’s just say that a certain news director has a little something in his background that he doesn’t want anyone to know about,” Erin said casually.

“Wait… You mean you blackmailed him?”

“Oh Jenny…blackmail is such a nasty word.  I prefer to refer to it as creatively influencing the behavior of others,” Erin said with an evil grin evident in her voice.

“You what???” Derek practically shouted into the laptop camera after Mike told him they lost one of the amulets.

“Dude, you didn’t see what we were up against!  There were at least a hundred of them and they had some nasty looking fangs.  They were fast as fuck too!  We barely got away!” Mike said defensively.

“You guys need to get that amulet back.  What if they figure out how to use it?” Derek asked.

“They seem pretty primitive.  I don’t think they’ll figure it out.  The thing is…we’re uh….”

“What?”

“Well, we’re not really sure where she dropped it.  She thinks she dropped it on the road when we took off running, but everyone was kinda freaking out, so we’re not sure,” Mike said.  Derek just let out a heavy sigh and shook his head.

“Do you have any idea what could happen if they do figure out how to use that thing?  You said you had a hundred of them chasing you.  Imagine if even a few of them came into our dimension and started chasing around random people, or even killing them.  The whole fucking game would be up then, wouldn’t it?” Derek asked.

I’ve just finished chapter 1 of Trackers!  This book starts off with the group in Scotland exploring one of the previously unexplored dimensions, only to have a bit of a mishap with one of the amulets.  I’m not sure how much I’ll be dividing the book between the two groups, or if I will at all.  I’ll just have to see how things go as I write it.  The main part of the story will involve the group in Scotland, which is why I’m not sure how much time I’ll be devoting to the others back in Washington.  Like I said, I’ll just have to see where it goes as I write it.

In the books I describe the old abandoned house that Jarrod loves so much as being surrounded by trees and having large flocks of small birds that fly through the air in perfect synchronicity.  This was based on a real house I visited several times as a teenager.  The birds are starlings and to see them flying this way in a video is special enough, but seeing it in person is truly magical.  It’s one of my favorite memories.  I’ve located a good video of what they look like while they’re flying.  Check it out and see just how magical they are.
